PERTH EAST HOLDS THE LINE ON TAX INCREASES
Council approves small increase to ratepayers
April 23, 2010
Milverton, Ontario
Despite the challenges faced with a reduction in the annual Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund Grant, Mayor Ian Forrest is pleased to announce that the budget increase for the Township of Perth East has been limited to 1.3% for 2010. This results in an overall increase of only 0.87% after County and Education levies are applied. Perth East Council passed the 2010 Budget and Tax Rates at the April 20th Council meeting. The total Township tax levy is $4,274,833, made up of a police levy of $855,271 and general levy of $3,419,562.
Perth East property tax bills will increase by $4.69 on an average residential tax bill. This calculation is made after assessment growth and second year impact of the Provincial assessment phase-in program. Operations comprise approximately 72% of the budget with capital projects at 28%. Expenditures of $11,531,772 are funded from taxation, grants, user fees and permit revenues.
Council continues to prioritize capital projects throughout the Township with several large projects on the go in 2010. Capital projects in 2010 include the construction of a new Library, Shakespeare Wastewater Project, Sports Field Improvements, as well as several road and bridge construction projects. Stimulus funding from the Federal and Provincial governments has been approved for some of these projects.
Detailed information on the 2010 Budget can be viewed on the Township website at
www.pertheast.on.ca.
Council is proud to commit to the Perth East Corporate Vision Statement and Core Values of Integrity, Teamwork, Service, Continued Improvement and Fiscal Responsibility.

REMINDER REGARDING OPEN-AIR/CONTROLLED BURNING:
Residents of Perth East are reminded that leaving a voicemail/message does not constitute permission or approval to burn. Recently, residents have called on weekends/non-business hours and left voicemail messages to notify of a burn. This method does not result in approval to burn.
When you decide to have an open-air controlled burn, please remember the following:
- Call during business hours (Mon-Fri, 8:30am-4:30pm)
- Give us at least an hour's notice before starting. Some residents have called during a burn or a few minutes prior - this does not provide enough time to process the information and inform the necessary agencies.
- If you leave a message, please include your phone number - wait until you have been contacted before starting to burn.
- If you want to burn over the weekend, please call the Township Office on the Thursday or Friday, during business hours - we can ensure you receive approval to burn during the weekend
- Open-Air controlled burns may not occur after dark - open-air burning is to be done during daylight hours ONLY.
- Campfires/recreational/cooking/contained fires, which are housed in contained sites, (such as wheel rims) are exempt from this process and do not require approval. These contained fires may occur at any time of the day/night, however must abide by the by-law clauses regarding distance from buildings/structures, noise/smoke nuisance, etc.
- There is to be NO burning of household garbage or any toxic materials such as plastic, rubber, gas, etc.
To obtain permission to conduct an open-air/controlled burn or for more information, please contact the Municipal Office at (519)595-2800.
